Which fonts have embedded thumbnails?

Color fonts are the common case. They store their glyph art as bitmap images (often PNG) inside the font file, for example in CBDT tables. Classic outline-only TTF fonts have no image to extract.

One or more PNG images carved out of the font file, up to 32 images per run. Most color fonts carry one PNG per glyph.

Is the font file modified?

No. The tool only reads the font and writes the extracted PNGs. Your font file is never changed.

This reads the font only; it never modifies your file. Fonts without embedded bitmaps (plain outline fonts) have nothing to extract.
