Will this work with any STL file?

It renders standard binary and ASCII STL meshes. The file has to be a real STL; anything else returns a clear error instead of a picture.

Does this read a thumbnail stored inside the file?

No. STL is a plain mesh format and does not carry embedded images, so the preview is rendered fresh from the model's geometry with Blender.

It ignores colors and materials (STL has none), and it does not edit, repair, or convert the mesh. It only produces a flat preview image.
