What exactly do I get back?

The preview thumbnail that was saved inside the deck, typically a PNG. PowerPoint stores one when "Save preview picture" or a thumbnail export is enabled.

What if my deck does not have a thumbnail?

Then there is nothing to extract and the page reports an error. We do not invent a picture that is not there.

Where does the thumbnail come from?

A .pptx is a package (ZIP) of parts. The preview lives at docProps/thumbnail.png, referenced by the package's thumbnail relationship. This page reads exactly that part.

Extract the embedded thumbnail from a PPTX

PowerPoint decks often carry a preview thumbnail — a small image of the first slide that file pickers and galleries show. If a deck has one, this page extracts it as a PNG, so you can reuse the preview or spot-check what a deck looks like without opening it.
