Will converting a PNG to AVIF make it look worse?

This tool recompresses the same pixels. It does not blur or resize the image. You should see the same picture in a smaller file.

How small will my image get?

It depends on the image. Screenshots and UI graphics often shrink significantly. Photos may shrink less. Try Fast first, then Smallest if you need every byte.

What about TIFF files?

AVIF conversion works best with PNG and JPEG files. While some TIFFs may convert, avifenc (the tool used) primarily supports JPEG and PNG formats. For TIFF files, try converting to PNG first, then to AVIF.

What you get

You get another image file. Same width and height. Same colors (or optimized colors). Usually a smaller number of bytes, which is what you want before you attach it or put it on a site.

It will not turn a JPEG into a PNG. If you need that, export a JPEG from an editor instead.
